Children and youth express their grief at the death of a person they love differently than adults express their grief. Children often require play, art, music and movement therapies to assist them in finding the “language” to express their grief. With youth, there is sometimes a change in behaviours. They may act in contradictory and inconsistent ways. They may benefit from expressing feelings with outlets for expression. Sometimes it is necessary to monitor for high-risk behaviours. Most importantly, someone who listens deeply serves the adolescent most highly.
Nanaimo Community Hospice through its trained counsellors provides the support children and youth require expressing their grief at the death of a person they love.
Outreach Vehicle
Nanaimo Community Hospice has a fully outfitted Outreach Vehicle that facilitates us visiting with students at various School District 68 elementary schools. Our Memorandum of Understanding with the School District allows us to provide a safe place for counselling and support through play and creative expression. Many of the children who access our Outreach Vehicle services could not otherwise connect with Hospice services.
